Scholarships

Scholarships are a form of "merit-based" financial aid for college. Merit-based means that the awarding and amount of scholarships is determined by a student's academic record, school involvement, community service, or personal factors such as heritage. Regardless of a student's financial position, they can and should apply for scholarships.

Institutional Scholarships

Many colleges and universities offer institutional scholarships. These are scholarships from the school awarded to students based on the student's merit. Common factors determining institutional scholarships include grade point average, special talents (i.e. in music or athletics), and intended major.

Some schools consider students for institutional scholarships at the time of their application. Others require applicants and admitted students to fill out another application to be considered for institutional scholarships. Some schools consider students for institutional scholarships at the time of application and also have a separate list of scholarships for which students need to specifically apply.

Be sure you communicate with the colleges and universities to which you have applied and ask about their institutional scholarships. You can contact their office of admission or financial aid to obtain this information. Good questions to ask each school include:

  • Do you offer institutional scholarships?
  • How can I apply for these scholarships?
  • What are your scholarship application deadlines?
  • What factors do you consider when awarding scholarships?

Local Scholarships

WHS students are strongly encouraged to apply for local scholarships. All local scholarships with a specific March deadline must be turned in no later than 8:00 a.m. on that day. There will be no exceptions. Those scholarship applications along with any required supplemental materials must be emailed to Ms. Bloechl or dropped off at the Counseling Office by the designated date/time. If they require supporting documents like a transcript or letter of recommendation, be sure to include them! Each scholarship has different requirements and directions for submission, please follow the directions carefully and good luck!
